Abstract
In this study, we investigated the level of depression in the rural elderly. And based on this, we tried to find out the impact of social exclusion, sense of community and community participation on elderly depression. For this study, we surveyed 250 senior citizens aged 65 or older living in Jeongeup. We utilized the IBM SPSS 20.0 statistical package to conduct statistical analyses. Let¡¯s look at the results of this study. First, the level of depression in the rural elderly is an average of 5.74 points (SD=3.322) out of the 0-15 point distribution.
Second, we found that the relative neighborhood exclusion area among the sub-factors of social exclusion had a positive(+) influence on the elderly¡¯s depression. Third, sense of community had a negative(-) effect on elderly depression. Fourth, community participation was also shown to have a negative(-) effect on elderly depression. Based on the results of this study, we sought practical measures to reduce depression of rural elderly and suggested implications.
